Rehab-based Movement science for bodies that are healing

Hurt doesn't mean stop. Movement is therapy.

Injury asks your body a question, and rest is rarely the answer. Tissue heals through load. Joints recover through motion. Confidence returns through doing. motionIQ turns that science into a rehab program that keeps you moving, rebuilds what's hurt, and protects everything that isn't.

Grounded in load-management, graded-exposure and pain-science research. The same principles modern rehabilitation is built on.

The science of recovery

Rest is not a plan. Movement is medicine.

Decades of rehabilitation research point the same way. Bodies that keep moving after injury recover faster, lose less, and return to life with more confidence than bodies that wait. Every motionIQ program is built on three things the evidence keeps telling us.

01

Hurt is not the same as harm.

Pain science has moved on. Pain is your nervous system's estimate of threat, not a direct readout of damage. Mild, predictable pain during movement is often safe and even useful. What matters is how it behaves: does it settle within 24 hours, and is it trending down? We track that, not just the number.

02

Tissue heals under load.

Cells in tendon, muscle, bone and cartilage sense mechanical stress and respond by remodelling, a process called mechanotransduction. Well-dosed, progressive load is the signal that tells injured tissue to rebuild stronger. Remove the signal and it stays weak, stiff and sensitive.

03

Rest has a cost. Deconditioning is fast.

Strength and muscle begin to decline within weeks of stopping. Fear of movement grows in the gap, and that fear predicts long-term disability better than the injury itself. Keeping the rest of you training protects your body, your mood and your sense of who you are while the injured area catches up.

“

Healing isn't something that happens to you while you wait. It's something your body does in response to what you ask of it.

Four programs

Rehab that meets you where you are.

Recovery is a spectrum, not a switch. Whether you're fresh off an injury or training hard with something that nags, there's a program that keeps you moving. Move between them as you heal, and we'll tell you when it's time.

Start here if it hurts

Rehab

For: a fresh injury, post-op, or pain that's stopping you from training at all.

A structured rebuild for knees, backs, hips, shoulders, elbows and ankles, following the progression model modern rehabilitation is built on: settle the irritation, restore range, reload the tissue, return to what you love. Paced by your symptoms, with clear milestones so you know you're healing and not just waiting.

  • Daily check-ins steer the plan, so a flare-up adjusts tomorrow instead of derailing the month
  • Calm it down, build range, add load, return to the things you love: in that order
  • Most of it needs nothing more than a floor, a band and a wall
3–4 sessions / week · 20–35 min

Most popular

Strength + Rehab

For: lifters and athletes with a nagging issue who refuse to stop training.

This is the one we wish existed years ago. Your rehab work and your strength training live in the same session. Every main lift gets modified around the injured area, never cancelled, and the rehab block earns its place next to your squats and presses.

  • Smart substitutions: if back squats irritate your knee, you get the closest lift that doesn't
  • Keep making progress on everything that isn't injured
  • Graduates you back to full loading when your body earns it, not when the calendar says so
3–5 sessions / week · 40–60 min

Injury-resistant

Strength

For: getting strong without the setbacks that usually come with it.

Barbell, dumbbell and machine programming with rehab principles baked into the structure: progressive, balanced and honest about recovery. We build the hips, upper back and tendons most programs ignore, so you spend your time lifting instead of rehabbing.

  • Load goes up when you're ready, not just because it's week 3
  • Prehab built into warm-ups so it actually gets done
  • Deloads triggered by how you're recovering, not a fixed schedule
3–4 sessions / week · 45–60 min
Start Strength
No equipment

Calisthenics

For: building real strength and control with your own bodyweight, anywhere.

From your first full push-up to pull-ups, pistol squats and beyond. Bodyweight skills are brutal on elbows, wrists and shoulders when rushed, so every session includes the joint prep that keeps you progressing instead of flaring up.

  • Progressions that meet you where you are, including the easier versions nobody shows you
  • Tendon and wrist work baked in, not bolted on
  • Floor, a doorframe or a park bar is all you need
3–5 sessions / week · 25–45 min

How it works

Rehab that listens, then adjusts.

Good rehabilitation is a conversation between what you did yesterday and what you can do today. motionIQ has that conversation before every session, so the dose is always right for the body that shows up.

1

Tell us what's going on

Where it hurts, how long it's been there, what makes it worse, and what you're training for. A short movement screen shows us how you actually move.

Example"Right knee, 8 weeks, worse on stairs and squats. I want to keep lifting and get back to running."
2

Get a program built around it

We pick the exercises your body can tolerate today, set starting loads you'll actually hit, and keep the rest of your training moving forward.

What that looks likeSpanish squats and step-downs for the knee. Hinges, upper body and conditioning untouched. Back squats paused, split squats in.
3

Check in, and we adjust

A 30-second check-in before each session tells us how yesterday landed. Good day? We progress. Flared up? We back off before you have to.

Six weeks laterKnee at 1/10 on stairs. Back squats reintroduced at 60%. Return-to-running plan unlocked.
What's inside

Built for bodies with a history.

Old injuries, long days at a desk, a knee that complains when it's cold. None of that disqualifies you from moving. It just means the dose has to be right, and the program has to pay attention.

The 24-hour rule

Sore during a session but settled by the next morning? That's a good sign. We track whether your symptoms calm down, because that tells us more than a single pain score ever could.

Smart substitutions

Can't press overhead today? You'll get a landmine press, not a rest day. Every exercise has a tolerable alternative ready to go.

Coaching cues that make sense

Short demos and one clear cue per exercise, written like a coach standing next to you. "Push the floor away" beats three paragraphs of anatomy.

Progress you can feel and see

Pain trending down, load trending up, range of motion returning. Watch it happen week over week, and share a clean summary with your physio or doctor.

Bring your own clinician

Already seeing a physio? Invite them in. They can see your check-ins, leave notes and adjust your plan, so what happens in the clinic and what happens in the gym finally line up.

We'll tell you when to see someone

Some things shouldn't be managed by an app. If your symptoms point to something that needs hands-on assessment or imaging, we say so clearly and pause the plan until you've been seen.

The app

One place for your training and your recovery.

No more juggling a rehab sheet from your physio next to a workout app that has no idea you're hurt. Everything lives in one session, written for the body you have today.

  • Rehab and strength in the same sessionYour knee work sits right next to your deadlifts. One warm-up, one plan, one log.
  • A quick word before every sessionPlain-language notes explain what changed and why, the way a coach would tell you.
  • Works in a basement gym with no signalLog everything offline. It syncs when you're back on Wi-Fi.
  • Switch programs as you healFinish Rehab and move into Strength or Calisthenics without losing a single week of history.
Why we built this

Why we believe in movement

The same story repeats. Someone gets hurt, they're told to rest, and they stop. Not just the thing that hurt. Everything. Weeks later the injury is a little better and the rest of them is a lot worse: weaker, stiffer, out of the habit, and quietly afraid of their own body.

The research has been clear for a long time. For most musculoskeletal injuries, staying active beats bed rest. Loaded tissue remodels. Moving joints stay mobile. People who keep going return sooner and stay better. The body is not a machine that breaks and waits for repair. It is a living system that adapts to what you ask of it, in both directions.

Movement is the therapy. Not movement that ignores pain, and not movement that fears it. Movement dosed with intent: enough to signal the tissue to adapt, not so much that it flares. That is what rehabilitation actually is, and it shouldn't disappear the moment you leave a clinic.

motionIQ exists to make that kind of movement available every day, for every session, to anyone who has been told to stop and knows, somewhere, that stopping isn't the answer.

Low back · Strength + Rehab

My physio said keep lifting, my old app said 5×5 or nothing. motionIQ was the first thing that gave me a version of deadlifts I could actually do that week. Fourteen weeks later I pulled a PR and my back feels better than before the flare-up.

Post-ACL · Rehab → Calisthenics

After my ACL I was scared of my own knee. The Rehab program gave me milestones instead of vibes, and it told me when I was ready for more before I believed it. Hit my first pistol squat last month.

Shoulder · Strength

I'm 52 and had written off overhead pressing for good. Turns out I just needed someone to build up the boring stuff first. Pressing pain-free for the first time in six years.

Honest answers

Questions we get a lot.

Still not sure? Email hello@motioniq.app. A real person reads every message.

For most common musculoskeletal issues, yes, and the evidence consistently shows it's better than resting completely. Clinical guidelines for conditions like low back pain, tendinopathy and many post-surgical recoveries now favour early, graded movement over rest. The key is dosing: the right exercises, at the right intensity, with pain kept in an acceptable range and monitored over time. That's exactly what the app manages. If something about your symptoms suggests you need hands-on assessment first, we'll tell you.

No, and we'd never claim it does. Think of it as what happens between appointments, after discharge, or for the nagging stuff that doesn't warrant a clinic visit. If you have an acute injury, sharp or worsening pain, numbness, or pain that wakes you at night, see a healthcare professional first.

Hurting right now and struggling to train? Start with Rehab. Training fine but managing a recurring issue? Strength + Rehab. Healthy and want to get strong or master bodyweight skills without getting hurt? Strength or Calisthenics. The onboarding screen will also recommend one.

That's normal and we plan for it. Rate it higher in your check-in and the next session adjusts automatically: lighter load, less range, or a different exercise. Flare-ups that settle within a day or two are part of the process. Ones that don't, we flag.

Rehab and Calisthenics need almost nothing: a floor, a band, maybe a doorframe or a park bar. Strength and Strength + Rehab assume basic free weights, but tell us what you've got and the program adapts to it.
